A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 33

On the last Saturday of my vacation I headed up to the downtown Boone area to stroll around and complete Page 33 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Cover your screen with black tape. Spend the day shooting and only remove the tape when you get home.

This was a little photo experiment that I enjoyed more than I anticipated. I would encourage anybody to try it.

I put an 18-135 zoom lens on my camera for this page. I decided I needed the extra challenge of also zooming blindly, in addition to composing blind for some reason.

Another thing that I didn’t expect to be so hard about the project (for me personally) was to have to so blindly trust auto-focus.

If you are getting a little bored in your photography, I definitely urge you to try this for an hour or so. It is more fun than it sounds. One other added bonus is not seeing the pictures takes us old-timers back to the days of film and not being able to get that instant gratification of what the picture looks like.

Here are the other pictures I took on this photo jaunt that I like (to one degree or another) but won’t physically be placed in the physical copy of A PHOTO JOURNAL:

I did not crop or straighten any of the pictures.

Season ‘Em, Put ‘Em on a Beat with Me, Then I’m Eating ‘Em

The world wasn’t ready for these MACRO pictures for the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE on Monday. I’m not sure that the world is ready for them now, but I can’t hold them back any longer:

The grand majority of these pictures were taken in my back yard. The first seven were taken at Herman Park. The closed eye is Kim Barker. It was taken behind the building at the Day Job.

The pictures in the folder called 11-23-07 are experimental photography heavy.

This deleted scene from THE EXORCIST really hits you hard.

The experimental pictures are images projected onto objects and then photographed again. The ones that are like “hey buddy, you’ve had enough LSD for tonight are being projected into an agitated sink of water. If you look closely, you should be able to pick out where the water is coming from the tap on a couple of them. One is a dryer sheet. The obvious one is obvious.

By bringing these images into the SmugMug Gallery, I was able to restore the following blogs from November 2007:

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

Some experimental photos of flowers and a picture of guy that’s criminal incompetence endangered and probably cost the lives of at least 200 firefighters on 9/11 and then turned around and exploited their heroism to increase his national standing afterwards. Despite lying to them about the dangers of the air quality at the Ground Zero site. Then some experimental photography.

Probably thinking about the time he falsely claimed he spent more time at Ground Zero than the workers.

Page 119 in THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT probably isn’t one that would appeal to most people. Some people might even call it a hipster page.

Page 119 – Turn a DSLR into a Pinhole Camera

Some of you might be asking, “What is a pinhole camera?”

A pinhole camera is a simple camera without a lens but with a tiny aperture, a pinhole – effectively a light-proof box with a small hole in one side.

Turning a DSLR into a pinhole camera is done by drilling a small hole into a camera cover. The idea of a pinhole camera is that everything is supposed to be in focus sorta, but it is blurred often because of the long exposure settings.

I didn’t do the best job with making my pinhole camera. My first hole was too big, so I had to make it smaller with electrical tape. I probably should have just bought one.

I probably need to dip back into the backlog if I’m ever going to get caught back up. These pictures were take on July 15, 2016. That year isn’t a typo.

Both the lilies and the hollyhocks were photographed in my backyard.

A quick reminder that Boone will be celebrating National Pet Memorial Day today (September 17) at 1 PM. The ceremony will be at the Best Friends Pet Cemetery, which is located a few blocks north of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad on Division Street. Pastor Doug (of Boone First United Methodist fame) will offer a blessing. Refreshments will be served.

Yet Another New Toy

I recently picked up a new set of toys: Extension Tubes.

I don’t have a picture of the tubes themselves, but I do have a collection of pictures from the from the first test run. Have a look:

I don’t have a picture of the extension tubes, but if you are wondering what it is they do here is a brief explanation.

Extension tubes sit between the rear of the lens and the body of the camera. What they do is reduce the minimum focusing distance of the lens, virtually making any lens a macro lens. Well, any lens with which they are compatible. Which isn’t every lens, by any stretch of the imagination. It is a relatively inexpensive way to play with macro photography without dropping a several Franklins.

It can also be used to turn a macro lens into a super macro lens.

Most of the pictures were taken with a lens that isn’t macro. The flower pictures were taken with a lens that was already macro.

The negative of extension tubes is you lose light (sometimes up to 3 stops) and they severely limit the focal range of your lens. But they sure are fun!

For example, the frog in the frog picture is about the size of a quarter. The pansies are also a little bit bigger than a quarter. More like a 50 cent piece. I’m sure these fun new toys will come in handy in about… oh 4 more weeks! If I was psychic.
