The Numbing Sensation of Everything

I took several pictures of my sad, pathetic, battered, old trombone. These are the ones that didn’t make the big cut for the big show on Monday.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is GOVERNMENT:

WEEK 238 - GOVERNMENT

A GOVERNMENT photo is any photo that has anything to do with the GOVERNMENT. Any level of GOVERNMENT. From a county hospital to a city park to federal highway.

Happy photo harvesting!

Fly Iowa Takes Manhattan

Time for the 8th thrilling chapter of pictures from Fly Iowa.

Here is one lesson want to give everybody from these pictures. Clean your sensor. Particularly if you are going to be taking, say 1200 pictures, with most of them against a blue background. Dust spots really show up against a blue background and they can be a pain to take out in Photoshop.

It can be intimidating cleaning your photo sensor, but it actually isn’t as hard as one would think. That being said, you definitely need the proper equipment. That is all I have to say about that… at this time.

Fly Iowa: The New Blood

Day 4 of working from home in the books. Another positive about working from home that I’ve discovered is the extra sleep. I didn’t think I would sleep in, but it turns out, I sleep in about an extra 45 minutes. The weird part is that Naima also sleeps in later too. I wasn’t expecting that.

Let’s see how Day 5 goes…

Fly Iowa Lives

Day 2 of working from home is in the books. The positive I learned about working from home today is that the bathroom is only about 10 feet away from my work from home desk. It is always open. At the mine, I don’t know if people’s bowel movements sync up or that my fellow miners take incredibly long times in there, but it seems like there is never a free bathroom.

It is a positive that I never have to wait for a clean (just cleaned it yesterday) bathroom. Also, Joe got his microphone working, so I can call him through Teams. He doesn’t have a webcam, but at least that is one more person I can have a conversation with that doesn’t involve a keyboard. Yeah, I know, nobody took my phone away, but it feels different somehow.

Today’s soundtrack was John Coltrane.

We’ll see how Day 3 goes.

2009-09-24

The pictures in the folder 2009-09-24 are from the annual Howard Family Photo Shoot in 2009.

Sometimes I look at old photos and think about how much I have improved as a photographer, but I think the area I’ve grown the most as a photographer is as a family photographer. That isn’t my forte by any stretch of the imagination and definitely isn’t a passion, but it has definitely been a source of growth.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from this photo shoot:

Bennett Family Reunion

Bennett Family Reunion

April 9, 2019

August 29, 2017

Recently I shared a collection of pictures I took of the old Boone Dump sliding into McHose Park. Aunt Linda sent me a story that I thought I would share, so you would know what kind of people I come from:

I really liked this history of the junk yard. I have fond memories of going to the junk yard as a family….my dad, mom, David, Gerald and me. Dad would take a gun in case we were attacked by rats. We often found treasures to take home for one reason or another.

I want you to think about this story the next time you even remotely think of trying to mistakenly labeling me as an elitist. I’m the guy that comes from a family that used to go to the town dump, with my Grandpa packing heat to fend off the junkyard rats! These are my people!

Happy birthday Aunt Linda!

The Union Street Theater is pleased to announce that a date has been chosen for March Movie Night. March movie night will be Sunday, March 29. March Movie Night will be a tribute to one of my favorite actors, Kirk Douglas. Kirk was the start of a few of my favorite movies of all-time. PATHS OF GLORY, LUST FOR LIFE, and SPARTACUS. Kirk Douglas was instrumental in elevating the greatest filmmaker in history, Stanley Kubrick, to prominence. If he had done nothing else, that would have been enough.

Kirk Douglas passed away in February at the age of 103. The Union Street Theater is pleased to pay tribute to the iconic Kirk Douglas with our March Movie Night. He is only the second actor to receive such a tribute. Burt Reynolds got a similar tribute in 2018.

These are the movies that will play for the Kirk Douglas Tribute. First, the B Movie is:

SATURN 3

Here is a synopsis of SATURN 3 from IMDB.com:

Two lovers stationed at a remote base in the asteroid fields of Saturn are intruded upon by a retentive technocrat from Earth and his charge: a malevolent eight foot robot.

The feature film will be:

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE

Here is a synopsis of LONELY ARE THE BRAVE from IMDB.com:

A fiercely independent cowboy gets himself locked up in prison to escape with an old friend.

Anders is also providing a short film that is very intriguing. This will also be the 3rd, but hopefully not the last round of Jay’s Root Beer Symposium.

To Recap:

What: Union Street Theater Movie Night
Movies: SATURN 3 & LONELY ARE THE BRAVE
Date: Sunday, March 29, 2020
Time: 6 PM
Where: UNION STREET THEATER
TOILET PAPER SITUATION: As of right now, I still have plenty of toilet paper.

Hope to see you there!
