Pufferbilly Day 2022 – Photo Contest

This is the final collection of images from Pufferbilly Days. This collection is the behind the scenes pictures from the Photo Contest. Which for the most part went well, but there are already ideas being explored to streamline some of the process. By streamline the process, I mean find ways for me to do less work.

There is going to be a new person running Pufferbilly Days in 2023. Laura moved on to a job at the best university in all the land, so it is hard to blame her. I don’t know how that will effect that Photo Contest, but I don’t think it will much. Those might be famous last words.

I imagine many of the same people will help me again next year. But I bet there will be some new people as well. I have my eye on some of you.

I’ve kind of gotten used to using Fridays to mostly share pictures from fairs or festivals. I think next Friday I will share some pictures from a Renaissance Festival I attended back in May.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is LINES:

WEEK 371 - LINES
LINES

LINES! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE?

But what is LINES photo? Lines are a very powerful compositional element. The eye will naturally follow lines through the image. This is why they use of leading LINES is a very popular tool. That would be placing your subject at the end of a line in the picture. But you don’t have to just use leading LINES. Just any picture of a LINE(S) would work. Whether they lead somewhere or nowhere. Of course there are all sorts of different types of LINES. There are LINES to the bathroom (or so I’m told, I’m a man, I’ve never experienced such a thing) or LINES at a cash register. Traffic LINES. Some of us that are a little more aged even have LINES on our face. In some ways, it is practically impossible to take an in-focus picture that doesn’t include LINES.

Happy photo harvesting!

Until I Die

Hey you man, where’s your motivation
And why the celebration
You’ve come to nothing, son

You wanna live until you
Die alone and will
Fly alone and will
I’m not so far below
I live beneath your sky
With tainted eyes,
I’ve made my mind
To live until I die
-Brandi Carlile

Thursdays are for flowers and here is another collection of flower pictures. I took these on July 20. Coneflowers. Lilies. Hollyhocks.

Town Sign Project: Lee County

A few weeks back I travelled to Lee County to harvest their town signs. Lee County is the southernmost county in Iowa. So it is a jaunt, but it was a good trip.

Here are some facts about Lee County:
+ Population is 33,215 making it the 22nd most populous county in Iowa. Below Marion County and above Boone County.
+ Largest town is Fort Madison.
+ Has two county seats: Fort Madison and Keokuk. The only county in Iowa with two county seats.
+ Lee County was formed on December 7, 1836 as part of the Wisconsin Territory and became part of the Iowa Territory on July 4, 1838.
+ There is no consensus on who the county is named after. It is either the company Marsh, Delevan & Lee a company with extensive interests in the area. Or perhaps it was the traitor Robert E. Lee who surveyed the Des Moines Rapids, or it was named after Albert Lea who helped explore the area.
+ Sit of the first U.S. military fort in the upper Mississippi region.
+ Was home of A “Half-Breed Tract” which was about as racist as it sounds.
+ Home of the Iowa State Penitentiary.
+ Major highways are: US-61, US-136, US-218, IA-2, IA-16, and IA-27.
+ Adjacent counties are Henry, Des Moines, and Van Buren.
+ Population peaked at 44,207 in 1960.

Lee County has two county seats, therefore it has two county courthouses.

Lee County has a solid but not spectacular collection of town signs. It is pretty clear which one is the worst one in the county though. It is Donnellson and there town sign thrown at the bottom of a billboard for Pilot Grove Savings Bank.

There are several town signs that I really like in Lee County. I like the West Point sign. I like the Montrose sign. I like the Fort Madison sign. I like Denmark sign. But it really comes down to the Argyle sign and the St. Paul sign. I’m going to give the purple ribbon to St. Paul though. By a nose.

28 participants! That is a good week.

Had submissions from (assumptions mostly) Pennsylvania, Iowa, Texas, Nebraska, Kansas, and California. And… Spain.
Which picture was from Spain? Joe’s hot dog picture.

Last week I forgot to point out that Kio I had a year straight of submissions! Very impressive.

But it isn’t all good news and Spanish hot dogs…

4 streaks were snapped. Jen and Evie and Sarah Karber couldn’t add a second week to their streak. Most tragically, Mary’s 16 week streak has gone down in flames!

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 371 - LINES
LINES

LINES! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE?

But what is LINES photo? Lines are a very powerful compositional element. The eye will naturally follow lines through the image. This is why they use of leading LINES is a very popular tool. That would be placing your subject at the end of a line in the picture. But you don’t have to just use leading LINES. Just any picture of a LINE(S) would work. Whether they lead somewhere or nowhere. Some of us that are a little more aged even have LINES on our face. In some ways, it is practically impossible to take an in-focus picture that doesn’t include LINES.

While considering possible subjects for your submission, meditate on the following quote:

A line is a dot that went for a walk.
– Paul Klee

I look forward to seeing your interpretation.

RULES

The picture has to be taken between 12:01 PM today and 11 AM next Monday. This isn’t a curate your photos project. This is a get your butt off the couch (unless you are taking your picture from the couch) and take pictures challenge.

You can send your images to either bennett@photography139.com OR you may text them to my Pixel 5.

That is all I got, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will all be sharing your idea of LINES in this place that is nothing more than a few million lines of code next Monday.

Baugher Family 2022 – Volume 3

It is time for another Formal Portrait Sunday. This is the last collection of formal portraits I took over a certain period of time. Therefore, this might be the last Formal Portrait Sunday OR in might be the last Formal Portrait Sunday to look like this OR it might just be another Formal Portrait Sunday in a line of Formal Portrait Sundays.

I don’t do a lot of Formal Portraits, cause that sort of thing ain’t my bag, baby. However, I am more than willing to do it for friends and family and people that pay me because I’m not opposed to money. I just don’t want to become so rich that I have an opinion on capital gains taxes. (Other than they should be taxed like all other forms of income.) Therefore, I don’t do a ton of formal portrait work. That being said, I do still have a couple formal portrait sessions in the can, that I haven’t shared. I just haven’t figured out how I’m going to share those yet. But it will probably be different than the way I have been sharing formal portraits recently. You will find out next Sunday… or you won’t. The world is a mystery.

So this collection of the Baughers… is the last from their photo shoot:

Keokuk County Aux

I would be remiss if I didn’t begin by noting that the Iowa Pork Producers Association announced the 2022 winner for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin.

Here is the press release:

A car dealership-turned-restaurant is where you’ll find Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin for 2022.

Lid’s Bar & Grill in Waukon, in the northeast corner of the state, has won the 20th annual contest, presented by the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and managed by its restaurant and foodservice committee.

“Obviously we enjoy highlighting our state’s delicious pork,” said Kelsey Sutter, IPPA’s marketing and programs director. “But this award also forever transforms local Iowa businesses, as tenderloin enthusiasts look forward to the announcement every year, and are known to travel lengthy distances to try a variation of this Midwestern staple.”

Each third-pound tenderloin is cut and twice tenderized at Quillin’s Food Ranch in Waukon. At the restaurant, the never-frozen meat is hand-breaded to order—dipped in milk then dredged through a seasoned breading.

“The tenderloins are actually fairly thick, so you can taste the pork instead of just breading,” said Dan Liddiard, who co-owns Lid’s with his wife Kelly. Lid’s is a shortened version of the couple’s last name.

The deep-fried favorite is served with lettuce and mayo on a lightly buttered and toasted bun, baked fresh daily also at Quillin’s. Sandwiches include a side of crinkle-cut French fries.

A few months back I cruised around Keokuk County harvesting their town signs. I didn’t spend much time their exploring cause I had to make it to Des Moines by a certain time to see Evie dance at the Renaissance Faire. Which in some way is a bit of a shame cause I was there on one of the weekends that they have a giant flea market in What Cheer. If you haven’t been to the What Cheer Flea Market, you should go check it out. I believe it happens 3 times a year and it is massive.

Chef Phil Carey, a tenderloin finalist judge, describes the sandwich as having “great pork flavor, with a wonderful breading that greatly complements the overall sandwich,” as well as a “perfect size of bun-to-pork-tenderloin ratio.”

The Liddiards are Waukon natives who opened the eatery in July 2020. Dan Liddiard had operated West Side Auto Sales on the site for nearly a decade. However, when car sales plummeted during the early months of COVID-19, he reduced his inventory and renovated a portion of the office, showroom, and shop for the restaurant. The Liddiards had no prior experience in food service.

“Nope,” Dan Liddiard admits. “Not till after the day we opened.”

Since being named among the top five tenderloin finalists earlier this month, tenderloin fans have been flooding in from all over the state, the Liddiards said. The business went from selling about 25 pounds of loins per week, to 35 to 40 pounds a day. A drive-up window accommodates carry-out customers.

“To be nominated for this was absolutely incredible,” said Dan Liddiard, choking back tears. “To win is 10 times that. It’s pretty great.”

IPPA’s restaurant and foodservice committee will officially present the best tenderloin award at the restaurant Tuesday, Oct. 18. Lid’s will receive $500, a plaque, and a large banner to display.

This year’s runner-up is Ludlow’s Steakhouse in Corydon, about an hour and a half south of Des Moines. The designation comes with a $250 prize and plaque from IPPA. Other finalists, listed alphabetically by town, have earned a top five plaque to display:

• Massena – Main Street Bar & Grill

• St. Olaf – St. Olaf Tavern

• Van Meter – 5th Quarter Bar & Grill

IPPA received 4,812 nominations for 449 different establishments during a spring nomination period. The restaurant and foodservice committee reviewed the top 40 restaurants in the summer. Each was scored on the quality of the pork, taste, physical characteristics, and eating experience.

The tenderloin contest recognizes Iowa dining establishments that offer a hand-breaded or battered pork tenderloin as a regular menu item. To win, businesses must be open year-round. The winners are announced as part of #Porktober22, or National Pork Month, which celebrates the state’s dedicated pig farmers and the great product they produce.

Victoria Station in Harlan, about an hour and 40 minutes west of Des Moines, won the 2021 contest.

TENDERLOIN APPRECIATION SOCIETY – HARLAN FIELD WORK

Waukon is a 3 and half hour drive from Boone. But don’t think I won’t make that drive. Sounds like a good excuse to take a Friday off. I have too much PTO anyways.

I need to start knocking off the Tenderloin Trail 2.0 as well. I should just stop working Fridays for awhile.

It was a bit of shame that I didn’t have more time there because I was there one of the weekends the What Cheer Flea Festival was going down. If you enjoy flea markets half as much as I do, you should make a pilgrimage there. It is massive and they hold it, I believe, three times a year.

Keokuk County is a good example of The Missouri Rule. If you don’t know, The Missouri Rule states that the closer in Iowa you get to Missouri, the more rundown and trashy the place you are in becomes.

The next time we hit the open road to see auxiliary images from THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT, we will visit Howard and Chickasaw County.

Pufferbilly Days 2022 – Mud Volleyball

Sometimes it happens that in my haste to post the THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE images I let one slip through the cracks. This week was one of those. Cathie actually submitted two pictures, but I only posted one for VIOLET. Cathie is one of those hardcore one submission I week folks, so I completely missed her second picture. So enjoy it now:

Cathie’s submissions were take in the Bahamas. So, that is another place on the map to color in.

For the first time ever, I went out to watch some of the mud volleyball tournament during Pufferbilly Days. I wasn’t sure I knew anybody that was competing, but I think my cousin Toby usually competes. I thought I would probably take pictures of a couple of games, but I immediately ran into Fran, so I ended up just taking pictures of one of her team’s games. I really only knew Fran on her team, so really, this is just a bunch of pictures of Fran, on some level.

I’ll definitely have to check out the mud volleyball again next year. I’ll have to check with Fran ahead of time to see if she is competing again.

I still have one or maybe two more collections of Pufferbilly Days photos to share. I’m on the fence for sharing the pictures from the model train swap meet. They aren’t great. We will see.

This is your reminder that this week’s THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE theme is MACRO:

WEEK 370- MACRO
MACRO

MACRO! What a great theme for Year 9 of THE WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE!

But what exactly is a MACRO photo? There is a long technical definition of MACRO photography that involves being a 1:1 ratio on 35 mm film, but for our purposes, just think of MACRO photography as getting close to your subject. On this theme you should figure out what the closest focusing distance of your camera is and be awful close to that in your closeness to your subject.

Happy photo harvesting!

Cannonball

I was born when I met you
Now I’m dying to forget you
And that is what I know
Though I dreamed I would fall
Like a wounded cannonball
Sinking down with my heart in tow

Bright lights like white lightning
Who shot me down
Who will cut me down
I’m frozen in my bed till the day comes around
How I’m lost
How I’m found

There’s a man all alone
Telling me his friends are gone
That they’ve died and flown away
So I told him he was wrong
That you friends are never gone
If you look to the sky and pray

-Brandi Carlile

Of course, Thursdays are for flowers. This collection of flower pictures I took on July 19 in my yard. A decent variety here. Got some lilies. Got two different types of daisies. Got some moonflowers. Got some sunflowers. Got some hollyhocks. Even got some phlox. Then a surprise little cutie thrown in at the end.

Another solid Flower Thursday methinks. Pretty sure I still have more flower pictures left to share on future Thursdays. Pretty sure…

The next time I share the auxiliary images from a THE TOWN SIGN PROJECT harvesting road trip, we will visit Keokuk County. Which mean, I probably should start thinking about sharing the Renaissance Fair pictures I took on that day. Wow. That was over 5 months ago!
