WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 68 – SELF-PORTRAIT

Well. We made it through the holidays and still had some participation. WooHoo!

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You want to see the submissions for SELF-PORTRAIT. Here they be:

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT - JEFF KEWER

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT - MICHAEL AUGUSTIN

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT - KIM BARKER

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 69 - MIRROR
MIRROR!

MIRROR! I’m pumped up for this theme. Mostly because I have lots of mirrors. Now I can get off my tookus and do something with them! So this theme should incorporate a mirror or mirrors into the photo. But feel free to use reflective objects that might not be the Merriam-Webster definition of a mirror. Like a calm mill pond. Define the theme however you see fit.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 RULES DIVISION

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.

2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by 11 AM on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

Nothing new to report. I’ll try to do better next week.

Want your own Photography 139 email subscription? Call, email, or text me and I’ll get you the hook up.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very mirrored Monday.

To a Great 2017!

Pretend like I published this on January 1, just like I meant to do.

It is that day at Photography 139 Headquarters where we take down our old Photography 139 Calendar and put it in the trunk with many of the other remnants of our past.

We like to think that 2016 was a successful year for Photography 139 and I’d like to thank everybody that was responsible for making it appear so.

So to my list of email blog subscribers…

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 67 – TRANSPORTATION

Sorry this is late. I’ve been working on a new commercial photography account that I will discuss in the near future. Don’t worry, this week’s theme is extremely easy. The 2 hours you lost won’t cost you. I guarantee it!

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about why this is late. You want to see the submissions for TRANSPORTATION:

WEEK 68 - SELF-PORTRAIT
SELF-PORTRAIT!

It is the teenage girl of photo themes! I can’t wait to see all the duckfaces that land in my inbox! I assume the holidays will cause the participation rates to dip again next week, but come on… this is a really easy theme. All you need is a self and a camera. Look at your phone. It has a camera on it. This week’s theme should be done and done!

A MESSAGE FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

The Photography 139 Shameless Self-Promotion Division is pleased to announce that Cassandra Chadwick is the latest person to show taste, class, and sophistication by signing up for a Photography 139 Email Subscription. Cassie I believe, represents the farthest west stretch of the Photography 139 Empire. She lays her head down at night in Colorado. Besting the current (I think) westest person, Laura Miller of Manhattan, Kansas. I’ll have to check the Photography 139 Heat Map to confirm that at some point. I met Cassie during the one year I spent at the Duff post of the Evil Clown Empire. I worked there for a full year and I can say literally (this is not an exaggeration for effect) she is 1 of only 4 people that worked there that I liked. Incidentally, she is the 3rd of the 4 to sign up for an email subscription. Seriously. That building was filled with awful people. Think of the worst people you remember from high school. Put them on steroids. Those were the people that worked there. I don’t know if I make friends easily, but in 1 year on that job, I only made 1 close friend. That number seems pretty low to me. But enough griping about that dark, dark year. The important thing to know is that Cassie was a shining light in a pit of darkness. After she cut herself free, she moved out west where she became a noted radio personality. The fame was too much for her, so she retired into a quieter career. Probably banking. So if you see Cassie out walking the mean streets of Colorado, be sure to give her a knowing glance and feel free to teach her the super secret Photography 139 Handshake!

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very selfie-ish Monday.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 64 – TOWN

This was definitely a tough week for participation rates. It was even a little tough for me. The early sunset. The national depression. The busy holidays. It has been tough the last few weeks. I get it. Hopefully there will be a bounce back next week.

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about participation rates. You want to see the submissions. Here they are:

WEEK 64 - TOWN - KIM BARKER

WEEK 64 - TOWN - BECKY PERKOVICH

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 65 - FAMILY
FAMILY!

FAMILY! What a great theme. But remember, don’t necessarily define family as a group of people that share genetic material. Families are defined by love. I bet everybody reading these words is a member of multiple families.

Just off the top of my head I consider myself to be a member of the following families:

The Bennetts
The Millers
The Petersons
The other Petersons
The Paris(es)
The Majors
Cyclone Nation
FNSC
Baby Got Rack
The Rats
Boone County Sea Dogs
The Methodist Youth Group
The Methodist Men
The Methodist General Congregation
The Boone Outpost of the Evil Clown Empire Alumni
The Campus Outpost of the Evil Clown Empire Alumni
The West Ames Outpost of the Evil Clown Empire Alumni
The Engineering Team of The Computer Mine
The Brother/Sisterhood of The Cup

That is just scratching the surface. I know of way more families than just the ones I belong to as well.

For example. There is an extremely popular show on AMC called THE WALKING DEAD. The show takes place after the zombie apocalypse and current definitions of society and family has broken down. Now people huddle together into new families. One family is lead by a bumbling moron that does nothing but get people killed through his poor decision making. This family is lead by a “man” named Rick. While this family is highly dysfunctional and borderline evil, they are still a family. There is another family that has a smart and charismatic leader. A leader that makes good decisions. Keeps his people alive and makes his fair and just decisions based on the rule of law. This family is lead by a MAN named Negan.

While Negan’s family is way more successful than Rick’s family. They are both families. Both would be eligible for the FAMILY theme. Don’t judge the quality of the family when determining what fits the theme.

Or do whatever you want. Our little family here has limited rules. But what are those rules…

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 63 – LOVE

There wasn’t as much LOVE in the world this week as one would have hoped. I’ll just hope that when we get to HATE, it isn’t a more popular option. But it is the world that we live in.

But you don’t want to listen to me talk all tommyrot about LOVE and HATE. You want to see the LOVE submissions:

WEEK 64 - TOWN
TOWN!

But what is a TOWN? Here is one definition:

an urban area that has a name, defined boundaries, and local government, and that is generally larger than a village and smaller than a city.

But for our purposes here, a village or a city work perfectly fine. This theme is a slight derivation of last year’s theme of HOMETOWN. This theme is a little more expansive because it doesn’t suggest a picture of a HOMETOWN, but of any town. What is it about that town or city or village that is unique to that town. A picture of any old downtown would do. A cityscape would work. A Christmas parade would work. A town sign would work. Let your imagination go wild! Define the theme any way you see fit.

NIGHT is a pretty self-explanatory theme. A NIGHT picture is any picture taken at night. Yes, I’d encourage you to get outside and take a picture with a long exposure or lit by the super full moon that will be out tonight. However, any picture taken at night or suggesting the night will do!

Great news! Alisa Baker is the latest person to show taste, class, and sophistication by signing up for a Photogrpahy 139 email subscription. Alisa is one of my favoritest people in the world. She was formerly the Youth Pastor at my church until she left us for a similar full-time position in some river town in THAT part of the state. Which reminds me that I need to go visit her soon since she still owes me dinner and I think you all know how I feel about free food. In addition to serving God as a “profession”, Alisa also is known to spend her free time serving God while doing mission work in Haiti. Alisa also introduced me to one of my current favorite musicians Lecrae. Go check out “Church Clothes” or “Take Me As I Am” or “Gangland” or “Nuthin'”. I’ll wait…… Alisa’s cat also has its own Twitter account. No. Naima isn’t getting her own Twitter account. Instagram account? Maybe. Twitter account… no. STILL LIFE!

Yes! STILL LIFE! He heard a cry across the landscape. But what is STILL LIFE? Try this definition for size!

Still life photography is a genre of photography used for the depiction of inanimate subject matter, typically a small group of objects. It is the application of photography to the still life artistic style. An example is food photography.

So find a group of inanimate objects. Group them together. Take their photo. Bam! STILL LIFE!

A healthy and diverse collection of submissions. Something to think about. This is the second time a picture of Pete Kostelnick (Boone native, Iowa State Graduate, and World Record Holder) has appeared in a WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE submission. Once when he was running through Boone. Now again when was finishing his world record trek across the United States in New York City. Do you think he will show up again? Yeah, I kind of doubt it too.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future! This week’s theme:

WEEK 60 - LANDSCAPE
LANDSCAPE!

LANDSCAPE is something I personally sometimes struggle with in my photography. At least I feel that I do. Not to the level where I struggle in my faith that God loves murderers and child molesters and rapists just as much as me. But it is a struggle nonetheless. Did it just get dark in here? I feel like maybe it just got dark in here…

But what is LANDSCAPE?

all the visible features of an area of countryside or land, often considered in terms of their aesthetic appeal.

That seems like a fair definition. However, for our sake. Feel free to consider cityscapes or waterscapes. I know a guy that LOVES cityscapes. He works in a booming metropolis. He gets infinite PTO and he doesn’t allow his underlings to listen to Bachman Turner Overdrive. Maybe he will finally throw his hat into the ring with a lovely cityscape taken on his lunch break. We’ll see.

As always… feel free to interpret the theme however, you see fit.

WEEK 59 - ROAD TRIP
ROAD TRIP!

We did this theme not that long ago, so it should be fairly fresh in the old memory banks. A picture of anything that might be a part of a road trip. My personal favorite road trip pictures are the super kitschy ones where your posse takes their picture in front of some landmark. That’s just what I enjoy. It isn’t like the photography I enjoy had me recently compared to a serial killer or something… By people who I’m sure are experts in the field… But I digress. All sorts of things would qualify. Pictures of an open road. Pictures of a car. Of a map. Of some place you went on a road trip. A ROAD TRIP could be solo. It could be with 5 friends. It could be a trip across the country. It could be a trip to the store. You’ll figure it out. BUT I WILL REMIND ME YOU OF RULE #1! Just because you took a great ROAD TRIP last weekend… doesn’t help you at all this week.

As always, feel free to define the theme how you see fit.

That’s all I got for today, so if the good Lord’s willin’ and the creek don’t rise, we will commune right here again next Monday. Hopefully it will be a very open roadsy Monday
