Band Festival

The last two years my church has manned the food stand at the Municipal Band Festival. The first year it was pretty successful, but maybe slightly unethical. Last year, it wasn’t very successful from a financial standpoint, but people that worked it had a good time.

Here are some pictures from last year:

I imagine we won’t have a hand in it this year for a wide variety of reasons. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the food stand replaced by a couple food trucks. But what do I know.

Dogs with Papers

Today is the last day of 2019. Therefore, I will reveal the November and December images for the 2020 Photography 139 Calendar.

November Image:

November

The November image is a collection of dew drops that were trapped in a spiderweb. The spiderweb was located on a evergreen bush in my front yard. This picture was selected to be entered in the Boone County Fair Photography Contest by Michelle Haupt. It received a Blue Ribbon. This picture was taken July 14, 2018.

On the left is the Jay Carlson Wildlife Area. In the distance Seven Oaks can be seen. This picture was entered in the Iowa State Fair Photography Salon, but was not selected for display. Before I left for the Mission Trip, I agreed to photograph the graduation of the Boone Area Humane Society’s Dog Obedience Class for Kio. Here are some of my favorite images from the experience:

Guess I’ll see you in 2020. Happy New Year’s Eve if you’re the type that celebrates. I believe I have successfully escaped being invited to a New Year’s Eve Party for like at least the 10th straight year!

Methodistgiving

For like the last 15 or 16 or more years, my church has held a free Thanksgiving dinner open to anybody in the community. The last few years I have went down and photographed the event until I needed to tap out and go to my family Thanksgiving.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from the day, you might even recognize a few faces from the Youth Group (present and past):

Selfie Project – October

Now is as a good of a time as any to check in with THE SELFIE PROJECT. I’m sure I did a bunch of interesting things in the month of October, but I’ll let you be the judge of whether or not I capture that while taking my daily THE SELFIE PROJECT photo or not.

Phew… 2 months to go!

Eastern Star Home Trick-Or-Treat – 2018

Once again, knocking out the 2018 backlog. On Monday night I sat through my favorite monthly meeting, the Outreach Committee Meeting. It was while I was sitting at that meeting, trying not to tinker with my phone, that it occurred to me that the Eastern Star Home’s annual trick-or-treat night was coming up soon.

It also occurred to me that I never published pictures from last year’s event. I usually go to the event to photograph people from the church that are there to volunteer and help out.

While I was perusing the pictures, it really hit home how drastically our church has changed in a few short months. But even when things change, things don’t change. If that makes sense.

Here are pictures from last year’s event:

This year’s trick-or-treat night will be October 22. It lasts from 6-7 PM. If you have a kid that likes candy, they will get lots of candy. If you would just like to volunteer to help out, I can hook you up with that opportunity as well.

Shimmer

It was a sad day in the Bennett Family. Carla and Jason had to say goodbye to their dog Shimmer.

Shimmer lived with me for about 6 months when Carla and Jason were building there current house, so I had a tight bond with Shimmer.

August 24, 2017

Today I had earmarked for a post on College GameDay being in Ames. However, with today’s passing of Shimmer, I felt it was more apropos to share pictures from the Boone Area Humane Society’s Pet Memorial Day Ceremony.

Pet Memorial Day was actually the Sunday of Pufferbilly Days, but because of Pufferbilly Days the ceremony was moved to last Sunday. Kio had me show up to take pictures.

When a pet dies, it is common for somebody to bring up the poem “The Rainbow Bridge”, but most people (probably me included) think it is just too damn depressing. Instead, let me share a depressing poem by Rudyard Kipling:

Four Feet by Rudyard Kipling

I have done mostly what most men do,
And pushed it out of my mind;
But I can’t forget, if I wanted to,
Four-Feet trotting behind.

Day after day, the whole day through —
Wherever my road inclined —
Four-feet said, “I am coming with you!”
And trotted along behind.

Now I must go by some other round, —
Which I shall never find —
Somewhere that does not carry the sound
Of Four-Feet trotting behind

Farewell Shimmer. You will be missed!

Pufferbilly Westminster

On the Sunday of Pufferbilly Days I was once again tapped to do photography for the Pufferbilly Days Pet Show by Kio.

There was a lot of Bennett to the Pet Show as Logan and Mom were both judges. Teresa also showed Mocha. I’d like to say that the show was a smashing success, but as the 11 AM start time approached, there was only one entry, a cat.

Fortunately, a couple were walking a couple dogs past the Pet Show and I was able to wrangle them into entering the Pet Show. I mean, I couldn’t have a cat win Best Overall. Not that I hate cats. A completely false reputation.

I also was able to talk Teresa into entering and I almost got Carla to enter, but she couldn’t get Chloe there in time.

Here are some pictures from the event:

Bake the World a Better Place

Today’s post is actually a mixture of the backlog and new pictures.

I never got around to posting pictures from the 2018 Methodist Men Pie Auction. Last Sunday we had the 2019 Methodist Men Pie Auction. The proceeds for both go to support the Youth Group Mission Trip. Between the two pie auctions raised over $3000.

The Methodist Men Pie Auction has been a smashing success every year it has happened and every year I’m nervous it is going to be a big time failure. Hopefully I’m never right.

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy:

The 2018 helpers from the Youth Group were MacKenzie Mosher and Anna Olson. The 2019 helpers were Megan Osborn and Hailey Bryant.

I think Teresa took the 2018 pictures. Chris Cromwell took the 2019 pictures.

Pufferbilly Days Dog Show

I thought I had published every picture I have taken for the Boone Area Humane Society, but while checking out the backlog I realized that was in error.

I never published pictures from the Pufferbilly Days Pet Show. Now the subject of this post called in the Pufferbilly Days Dog Show, but it was actually a pet show, where wisely, nobody entered a cat.

I would guess that these would be the final pictures I will ever publish that I took for the Boone Area Humane Society, but Kio tells me that I might not be retired yet. As far as the Humane Society goes, I do whatever Kio wants.

Here are a few of my favorite pictures from the day:

My Mom was a judge for the pet show.

If you are wondering why I’ve never entered Naima into a pet show, well the pet show world isn’t ready for what she brings to the table.

Summer Reading Kickoff

This is the last collection of photos that I believe I’ll ever publish that were taken for the Boone Area Humane Society.

Perhaps I shouldn’t say “ever”. But I’m guessing it will be for at the very least, for the foreseeable future.

These pictures were taken at the Ericson Public Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff.

The main things I remember about the day was the kid that was supposed to play Hope the BAHS Mascot was about an hour late. He went in and put the costume on. Then he walked around for maybe 10 minutes. Then he left.

In that 10 minutes, I was able to get a few pictures of Hope in action:
