WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 17 – TEXTURE

Considering that this week’s theme was the most accessible, I feel like the amount of submissions isn’t too shabby.

Let’s have a look at the submissions for TEXTURE:

WEEK 17 - TEXTURE - ANGIE DEWAARD 1
Angie DeWaard 1

WEEK 17 - TEXTURE - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 17 - TEXTURE - MICHELLE HAUPT
Michelle Haupt

WEEK 17 - TEXTURE - ANGIE DEWAARD 2
Angie DeWaard 2

WEEK 17 - TEXTURE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

But what is this week’s theme? Scroll down:

WEEK 18 - STORE
STORE!

There are multiple definitions of STORE. When this theme was written, Humble Narrator was thinking about a place you go and buy things, but you can define the word in any way that speaks to you.

Since we are several weeks in, we should have a rules refresher.

RULES

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge.
2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by noon on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

That is it, them’s the rules.

HOUSEKEEPING

PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION

There is a new email subscriber to celebrate this week. Sarah Karber has shown her keen intellect and sophisticated tastes by becoming a Photography 139 email subscriber. Sarah once worked for the Smithsonian and she got her Divinity degree from Vanderbilt. In short, she is one of the most fascinating people I know. So if you see her out and about walking the mean streets of Boone, feel free to give her the knowing glance and show her the super-secret Photography 139 handshake.

PHOTOGRAPHY 139 SUPER-SECRET HANDSHAKE DIVISION

I haven’t heard any reports from this division for quite some time. I think they’ve given up.

BLOGGING NEWS

A reminder that while I’m not posting these in AN ARTIST’S NOTEBOOK AKA The Journal AKA this here blog, the 2016 SELF-PORTRAIT PROJECT (or as Russell calls it THE SELFIE PROJECT) is ongoing and you can check in on it over yonder:

2016 SELF-PORTRAIT PROJECT

On Saturdays, I’m going to start publishing lists. This won’t be shared on any social media. It will be kind of a perk for being an email subscriber. Well, maybe a perk. Maybe a torment. I don’t really have real strong plans for it, but I’m sure you’ll be able to look forward to my opinions on things I know about (the best tenderloin spots in Iowa) and things I don’t really know about (I’m not really sure what qualifies here) to things I don’t really care about, but other people do (ranking the best STAR WARS movie to the worst).

Well, stop reading this and get out and take a STORE picture!

2015

So the walk down memory lane now concludes. With a look at the images that were in the calendar that early this morning will be taken down from kitchen walls (most common place I’ve seen the calendar hung up), office walls, cubicle walls, and placed gently in the trash with yesterday’s coffee grounds. 2015 Photography 139 Calendar I bid you a fond adieu.

CALENDAR & POSTCARD GALLERY

Since yesterday was the end of year and a holiday that many people celebrate (not me though, I don’t need the calendar gestapo telling me when to start a new year) I would like to take a quick moment to thank everybody that has continued to be an email subscriber to this here blog.

Off the top of my head and I apologize if I miss anybody:

These people are all original subscribers or at least haven’t changed their email since August 22, 2011. Which is how far back the records from off the top of my head go.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 15 – FRAMED

I expected Christmas to take a toll on this week’s submissions… and it did.

But 2 submissions isn’t too bad for a more difficult theme and it was Christmas!

This week’s submissions for FRAMED:

WEEK 15 - FRAMED - MICHELLE HAUPT
Michelle Haupt

WEEK 15 - FRAMED - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 15 - FRAMED - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

WEEK 15 - FRAMED - SHANNON BARDOLE
Shannon Bardole

Time to look forward to this week’s theme…

WEEK 16 - RED
RED!

That should be a simple enough theme. Especially as the holidays continue. Including one of the biggest holidays of the year. The beginning of the Big 12 Basketball Conference Schedule!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 14 – BLACK AND WHITE

I don’t think that it is a secret to anybody that knows me at all that black and white photography is my true photographic love. And we all know that true love is the greatest thing in the world – except for a nice MLT – mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomatoes are ripe.

But I digress.

The point is I’ve been looking forward to this week for 13 weeks now! Let’s see the submissions.

WEEK 14 - BLACK AND WHITE - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich

WEEK 14 - BLACK AND WHITE - ANGIE DEWAARD

WEEK 14 - BLACK AND WHITE - KIM BARKER 1

WEEK 14 - BLACK AND WHITE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

WEEK 14 - BLACK AND WHITE - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest

If it was up to me, I would’ve thrown in BLACK AND WHITE as a category 4 or 5 times. Unfortunately, it just dawned on me that it is up to me. Maybe next year.

But why dwell on the past, when we have the future to look forward to? Let us look at this week’s theme…

WEEK 15 - FRAMED
FRAMED

This category doesn’t necessarily mean an object inside of a literal frame. Think of this as an object that your view is framed by other objects. Or think of this any way that you like.

MESSAGE FROM PHOTOGRAPHY 139’S SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION.

Big time welcomes are due to not ONE, but TWO new email subscribers. So give BIG welcomes to new Photography 139 email subscribers Dawn Krause AND Joe Duff. I believe Joe to be our first subscriber from Texas! Going global… soon!

I would normally tell you that if you see them on the streets to give them a knowing glance AND don’t be shy about showing them the secret Photography 139 handshake. However, the Secret Handshake Division has yet to finalize the handshake. So at this time the knowing glance will have to suffice.

Welcome aboard Joe and Dawn. I know you shall fare well!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 12 – STILL LIFE

If I didn’t already have an established protocol for the naming of the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE journal entries, I might have named this here entry: WHERE HAVE ALL THE DUDES GONE?

Male participation has declined dramatically in the last couple of weeks. I’m not complaining for personal reasons. I’ll never complain about being surrounded by such lovely ladies. I’m just saying its weak. Get on it men!

Here are this week’s submissions for STILL LIFE:

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - CARLA STENSLAND
Carla Stensland

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - MICHELLE HAUPT
Michelle Haupt

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - SHANNON BARDOLE
Shannon Bardole

WEEK 12 - STILL LIFE - LAURA MILLER
Laura Miller

Time to look to the future and reveal this week’s theme:

WEEK 13 - GAMES
GAMES!

But how does one define GAMES? I would define it like this:

GAMES – noun – a form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decide by skill, strength, or luck.

Nothing new from Photography 139’s Shameless Self-Promotion Divison to report.

As always, I look forward to seeing this week’s submissions!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 10 – WORK

There was a bit of a falloff in participation this week, but that was to be expected. I fear this week’s theme will really scare people. That is okay, everybody needs to get out of the comfort zones once in a while.

This week’s submissions:

WEEK 10 - WORK - CARLA STENSLAND
Carla Stensland

WEEK 10 - WORK - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 10 - WORK - LAURA MILLER

WEEK 10 - WORK - SHANNON BARDOLE
Shannon Bardole

WEEK 10 - WORK - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

Angie DeWaard

WEEK 10 - WORK - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich

This brings us to the time where we reveal this week’s theme…

WEEK 11 - RELIGION
RELIGION!

I told you it would be something that isn’t in everybody’s comfort zone. However, I hope there is still a good amount of submissions.

Time for a definition:

religion – noun – a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.

And of course… time for a couple of housekeeping notes from PHOTOGRAPHY 139’S SHAMELESS SELF-PROMOTION DIVISION.

Michael Houlihan has become the latest person to show taste, class and sophistication by becoming a Photography 139 subscriber. So if you see Michael prowling the mean streets of Ames, Iowa you can give him a knowing glance and of course, the super secret Photography 139 handshake.*

Other sidenote, only 1 person responded positively to the return of the Proust Questionnaire, therefore it will not be making a December return. Take that Proust!

*A loyal subscriber has volunteered to create a Photography 139 handshake. They will then run their creation by my handshake expert. It is possible, that there will be a video on how to do the handshake in the nearish future.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 9 – FOOD

A pretty fair amount of submissions this week. I hope the momentum continues next week with a subject matter many people are less familiar with than FOOD. There is also, not one, but TWO first time contributors in this week’s submissions! Hopefully they feel inspired to keep submitting, even though this week’s theme will be harder. Hooray!

This week’s submissions:

WEEK 9 - FOOD - CARLA STENSLAND
Carla Stensland

WEEK 9 - FOOD - LAURA MILLER
Laura Miller

WEEK 9 - FOOD - MICKY AUGUSTIN
Micky Augustin

WEEK 9 - FOOD - MICHELLE HAUPT
Michelle Haupt

WEEK 9 - FOOD - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard One

WEEK 9 - FOOD - ANGIE DEWAARD
Angie DeWaard Two

WEEK 9 - FOOD - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT

WEEK 9 - FOOD - MONICA HENNING
Monica Kewer

WEEK 9 - FOOD - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest

WEEK 9 - FOOD - SHANNON BARDOLE
Shannon Bardole

WEEK 9 - FOOD - KIM BARKER
Kim Barker

WEEK 9 - FOOD - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich

WEEK 9 - TERESA KAHLER - FOOD
Teresa Kahler

Time to reveal next week’s theme. My clue earlier was that it was something that many people aren’t as familiar with as they are food. Of course, that doesn’t include anybody with in the sound of these words.

Next week’s theme!

WORK!

WORK – /werk/ noun – Activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.

Hopefully the enthusiasm for this project carries over!

Time for a quick housekeeping note from Photography 139’s Shameless Self-Promotion Division. We are pleased to announce that a new email subscriber has been added: Laura Miller of Manhattan, Kansas. I believe her to be the third person that resides in Kansas to subscribe to this here blog. If you see her out and about, give her the knowing glance AND feel free to teacher her the super-secret Photography 139 handshake. Welcome aboard Laura!

Use Them. Enjoy Them. Dominate Them.

Over 4 years ago, I felt it was time to retire The Friend Wall and replace it with something else. After reading a book from THE DAILY SHOW I came upon the idea to have 9 people pose while conveying 9 different emotions.

Many times I’ve thought about bringing back THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT with more people. Not just 9 more people, but more people. I even had a false start with Dawn that resulted in a photo shoot where the images have since been lost.

However, I now have began the process of starting again. I’m not sure where this will lead. There isn’t a timeline or a plan. I don’t know if any of the original 9 will come back and recreate their original photo shoot. Anything is possible.

So meet Michelle, who has become the first person to pose for the next generation of THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT photos.

9 Emotions - Michelle Haupt
Michelle Haupt

Read the 9 emotions left to right. Top to bottom. Take Tylenol for any headaches. Midol for any cramps.

1. Joy
2. Sadness
3. Anger
4. Amusement
5. Fear
6. Jealousy
7. Surprise
8. Sympathy
9. Boredom

I have even created a Gallery that is dedicated to housing the images from THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT.

The original 9 were:

1. Cousin Amy
2. Sara
3. Derrick
4. Jen
5. Jesse
6. Jay
7. Shannon
8. Willy
9. Jlll

If you want to visit that gallery, click on the link below:

THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT

Inside that gallery, for the first time for public eyes, I have released my photo shoot for THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT.

A question you might ask is this:

Will this pathetic mining of the past lead to future past mines?

The answer is maybe. I have tentatively been thinking about bringing back THE LABELS PROJECT as well. However, I really need to meditate on that one. I’ll get back to you on that one.

Another question might be:

Will these new images go on the THE 9 EMOTIONS PROJECT WALL in my living room?

The answer is no. I have a plan for that wall, but it is extremely expensive. What is that plan? Donate to my Go Fund Me page and maybe I’ll tell you*.

*I don’t have a Go Fund Me page.

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 8 – WATER

I was a bit worried about this week. Early this morning there were zero submissions. I thought that this week might be strike 1 against the Weekly Photo Challenge, but slowly a few submission came in.

Here are those submissions:

WEEK 8 - WATER - MICKY AUGUSTIN
Micky Augustin

WEEK 8 - WATER - MICHELLE HAUPT
Michelle Haupt

WEEK 8 - WATER - MIKE VEST
Mike Vest

WEEK 8 - WATER - CHRISTOPHER D. BENNETT
Christopher D. Bennett

WEEK 8 - WATER - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich One

WEEK 8 - WATER - BECKY PERKOVICH
Becky Perkovich Two

WEEK 8 - WATER - MONICA KEWER
Monica Kewer One

WEEK 8 - WATER - MONICA
Monica Kewer Two

WEEK 8 - WATER - CARLA STENSLAND
Carla Stensland One

WEEK 8 - WATER - CARLA STENSLAND
Carla Stensland Two

This brings us to the time where we unveil this week’s theme. It is an easy one!

WEEK 9 - FOOD
FOOD!

There should be a ton of submissions for this theme! Almost everybody I know eats! And the majority of those people eat food!

food – noun – Any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink, or that plants absorb, in order to maintain life and growth.

It is also time for a quick housekeeping note from Photography 139’s Shameless Self-Promotion Division:

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new member of the email subscription family… Elizabeth Nordeen. Therefore, if you see Elizabeth Nordeen out and about (when she goes out and about) give her a knowing look and feel free to teach her the super-secret Photography 139 handshake.

Welcome aboard Elizabeth! We know you won’t openly regret it!

WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 7 – SHADOWS

The theme SHADOWS must not have done it for many people. At least there was a new submitter this week. Welcome aboard Shannon!

Perhaps this week’s theme will be more to the liking of more peoples.

This week’s submissions:

Shannon Bardole

Christopher D. Bennett

Angie DeWaard

So it is time to unleash this week’s theme. It is an easy one. I swear!

WATER!

Water – noun – A colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid that forms the seas, lakes, rivers, and rain and is the basis of the fluids of living organisms.

As always, email your submissions to bennett@photography139.com by noon next Monday.
