WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE – WEEK 37 – EMOTIONS

EMOTIONS was a profoundly unpopular theme. I’m sure destined to hit the cutting room floor if this challenge extends into a second year. Maybe it was the holiday weekend. Maybe people were like feelings? Actually feeling something? No thanks! Back to my mass consumerism, thank you very much*. Either way, Angie was the only person that kept this theme from being a shutout and being the first strike against this challenge.

But enough dwelling on the past. Time to look to the future. We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives. And remember my friend, future events such as these will affect you in the future.

This week’s theme is…

PERSPECTIVE

Back when I was compiling the list of 52 themes, I thought about breaking PERSPECTIVE into LOW PERSPECTIVE and HIGH PERSPECTIVE, but I thought it would be interesting, given the choice where people would go. The level of a rat or the level of an eagle. Both animals forage through trash for food, but their perspective on the world is totally different.

However, being high or low isn’t the only definition of perspective. As always, feel free to define perspective any way that you want.

RULES

1. The picture has to be taken the week of the theme. This isn’t a curate your pictures challenge. This is a get your butt off the couch (my personal experience) and put your camera in your hands challenge. Don’t send me a picture of you next to the Eiffel Tower, when I know you were in Iowa all week. I will point out that I have let that slide some in the past. I will not in the future. Since it is literally about the only rule.
2. Your submission needs to be emailed to bennett@photography139.com by noon on the Monday of the challenge. It should be pointed out that this blog auto-publishes at 12:01 on Mondays. So it wouldn’t hurt to get your picture in earlier.

*Just wanted to make sure everybody knows that I’m a minimalist and that I’m super excited about the new movie coming out about my people.

It looks like LETTERS AND/OR NUMBERS also wasn’t an extremely popular theme. Might have to put it on the chopping block if this little project continues into a second year. I guess we’ll see.

On the positive though, it was extremely popular with first time submitter Sara Lockner. Hopefully this won’t be the last time a theme rings the creative bell for Sara.

EMOTIONS!

But what are EMOTIONS! Google defines EMOTION as a natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances, mood, or relationship with others. So capture somebody displaying an emotion. Even a second hand emotion like love. Or capture a scene that is the result of a emotion. Capture an image that is supposed to incite an emotion. (Although, quite frankly I hope that is what you’re trying to do with every image.) Or as always, define the theme any way that you want.

I am pleased to announce that in the last week, we have added 4 new email subscribers to the Photography 139 Empire. Jodie Bennett, Corinna (Logan’s lady friend that I never attained a last name for), Jeff Daniel, and Stephanie Kim all showed off their keen intellect and sophistication for signing up for an email subscription to this here blog. GLASS!

Those of you with a little bit of elephant in you may be a little like: “Didn’t we just do GLASS?” However, those of you that are more learned will know that more than just windows are made of GLASS. Things like glasses are made of GLASS. The kind you drink out of and the kind you put on your face. (At least they used to be.) Bottles. Also made of glass. (At least they used to be.) Lenses. Made of glass. (At least they used to be.) Lots of wonderful art is made out of GLASS. So go out and explore the wonderful world of GLASS.

PORTRAIT!

This is a nice and easy theme. The only person I would expect to struggle with this theme would be a true Lone Wolf. For the sake of this theme, a PORTRAIT would be considered a posed photo of somebody. That somebody could be a person, an animal, or a stuffed animal. Interpret away! As always, I can’t wait to see the submissions.

Got a Couple of Couches, Sleep on the Love Seat

Here is a collection of pictures that didn’t make the cut for RUINS in the WEEKLY PHOTO CHALLENGE.

One of the reasons these photos ended up on the loser pile is because I had already used an abandoned train bridge (on the same abandoned right-of-way) in my WATER picture. While it is a different bridge, I didn’t want to draw water from too similar of a well.

So I made a rookie mistake and left my camera battery at work over the weekend. Good thing that I had already taken a plethora of pictures of old things on Wednesday.

So what is this week’s theme…

COUNTRY!

So what is COUNTRY? When I wrote this theme down and put it on a Post-It note, my basic concept of country was anything that isn’t within a city limits. Anything rural would qualify. However, you can take the theme any way you want it. Want to saunter down to your local honky tonk and grab a picture of a pretend cowboy. That would qualify. Have a cherry collection of old Tom T. Hall 8 tracks? Take a picture of that. If you want to take a picture of a map and say “look, it’s a country!” Do that. Express the theme however you see fit.
