2009-04-11 & 2009-04-20

There aren’t many pictures in the folder 2009-04-11, so I’m publishing photos from the folder 2009-04-20.

The pictures from the folder 2009-04-11 are from when Derrick and Jen moved into their new house. They moved about a month after I moved. They have since moved again. I have not. They have added 4 people to their living circumstances. I have added Naima. I’m not moving anytime soon. Naima seems to like it here.

The pictures from the folder 2009-04-20 are from the Iowa State Spring Game. I miss the Spring Game. I hope Iowa State brings it back someday. Not for the game itself, but it is just nice to get outside and watch some football in April.

2009-01-05 & 2009-01-25

There aren’t many pictures in the folders 2009-01-05 and 2009-01-25 so I decided to combine them into one post.

The pictures are mostly from a trip around Boone during a snowstorm and Nader and I’s last trip to the Varsity Theater.

Many people may not remember the Varsity. It was on Lincoln Way across the street from Lake Laverne. It showed foreign, independent, and arthouse movies. It still hasn’t been properly replaced. Now Ames have two multiplexes that devote almost all their screens to whatever mindless Marvel or Star Wars movie is being released that week.

Then if you want to see something original or thought provoking you have to take a ride down to Des Moines. Even Des Moines recently lost one its independent cinemas. Also, call The Varsity.

The sweet Iowa State scarf was a Christmas present from Teresa. She also took the pictures of Nader and I.

2009-01-02 & 2009-01-03

The pictures from the folders 2009-01-02 and 2009-01-03 involved a trip to ACTORS theater in Ames. Plus a trip to Ottumwa to work on the house that Jen inherited. Plus there are some pictures of when I had winnowed down what house I would purchase down to two similar ranch style houses.

The house that I would ultimately purchase was the lucky winner mainly because it had the better yard. It had the better yard times a million. The intention was always to get a golden retriever when I was back up on my own feet and living on my own again.

As I look at the pictures of the runner-up, I assure you Naima would not have been happy with that yard. I also wouldn’t have been happy with such a small yard too. I mean, if you’re going to care about my happiness.

Sometime in late 2008 my organizational process of my photos went all FUBAR. The result is that it appears that I have actually lost several images from late 2008 and early 2009.

None of the lost pictures are of much consequence, but it is annoying nonetheless.

Part of this breakdown in the system was that it seems that rather than breaking images into folders by date, I just dumped a ton of pictures into the December folder.

Fortunately for you, I don’t usually take a ton of pictures in December. However, this still potentially might be one long journal entry.

There are pictures from Iowa State at night, Toys for Tots, an American Legion event in Roland, Iowa State basketball, Shannon dressed nice for once, a night with the Daniels, and crayfish that took home from a Chinese buffet.

Here we go:

Looking at those pictures something that struck me is that I had forgotten how badly Greg McDermott had destroyed Iowa State’s basketball program. Thank you Creighton for taking him off of our hands! It is a debt that can never be repaid!

A Photo Journal – Henry Carroll – Page 122

I have been absolutely horrible about working on THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT lately. This will be the first post I’ve had since December 28, when I posted pictures of Andy’s progeny competing in the ages old activity of wraslin’.

I need to put my nose to the grindstone and stop getting stuck in cases of intellectual paralysis. I got to stop overthinking each theme and perhaps more importantly getting overly married to 1 or 2 concepts per theme. I absolutely intend to take at least one of these pictures every week.

By my calculations I have 31 pages left to complete. My goal is to have this finished by the 4th of July.

Expect for me to bug you about potentially being in or assisting in one of these project very soon.

I have a couple other projects I want to get going and I don’t want to just quit on this one. My mama didn’t raise any quitters. If she did, it must be one of my sisters.

With that in mind, last Thursday night I went out and knocked out Page 122 of THE PHOTO JOURNAL PROJECT:

Page 122 – Take a picture by the light of the full moon.

Here are a couple alternates I took a long time and never liked enough to publish:

I kept holding out for taking picture of an abandoned car and another idea I never pulled the trigger on was an abandoned school on Highway 169 near Highway 141.

This week, I hope to pull the trigger on 1 of the following themes:

+Page 16 – Photograph the last thing that made you laugh.
+Page 36 – Use shutter speed to capture ANGER!
+Page 43 – Take a picture that only works in B+W.
+Page 82 – Show us the world is flat.
+Page 109 – Change a word to change its meaning.

But we’ll see how the cookie crumbles.

The pictures from the folder 11-15-08 are from the final home game in Iowa State’s Gene Chizik era.

I can still remember the afternoon I head that Chizik was leaving for Auburn. I was driving around with Jason looking at potential houses when the rumors came across the radio.

We were looking at a house where the current occupant had smoked so much that you could smell it from the driveway. It was awful. As awful as these rumors. Rumors that I scoffed at and dismissed out of hand.

Auburn was not necessarily a national power, but they were certainly a national name. They had just fired a coach that consistently won 8 or 9 games a season. There was no way they were going to hire a coach who had gone 5-19 at Iowa State. A coach who had lost his last 10 games. Many of them weren’t even close.

But it still happened. Auburn hired Chizik. Iowa State was without a head coach. I was still without a house. It was a weird world.

The tailgating pictures make me nostalgic. I do need to do more tailgating this season than I have the last few. I probably say that every year though.

The images from the folder 11-1-08 are all over the place. They include pictures of Jesse and I exploring the disc golf course in McHose Park to pictures of Shannon before she made a donation to Locks of Love to pictures of my Hoosier before it got fixed up to pictures Halloween in 2008.

I’m not a frolfer, but I do think that McHose Park has a badass disc golf course. The first 9 holes are nothing special, but the back 9 is a man’s golf course. When I say man’s golf course, what I really mean is that it isn’t for the faint of heart. It is for people that aren’t afraid to get lost in the woods and never heard from again.

The Hoosier pictures were taken from before Shannon’s dad came to pick it up. It was in storage and he did a wonderful job making it presentable again and he did it in plenty of time before I found a house to call home. Which was quite the feat, even though I did take my own sweet time with my house hunt.

The pictures of Shannon before she cut off her hair were taken in Brookside Park. This was Shannon’s 3rd donation to Locks of Love. In that collection of pictures is one of my favorite pictures of Shannon and I believe it is safe to say that I have taken lots of pictures of Shannon.

Finally, the 2008 Halloween pictures includes a picture of Willy in what was definitely the best Halloween costume he has ever had.

The stick figure pumpkin is the best pumpkin I have ever carved. Jay hated it. I’m not bitter about that, otherwise I wouldn’t be bringing it up over 10 years later.
