Camping World Bowl Road Trip Day 3 – The Game

Day 3 was the only day we spent entirely in Orlando. It was one full day too many. Orlando is flat out one of the worst cities I’ve ever visited. It is dirty. It is poorly laid out. There is no culture. There is no music. There is no historical significance. There are no beaches. There aren’t any parks. There isn’t much to do.

I would rank Orlando just above Omaha for worst cities I’ve ever visited. Frankly, if I never go back to Orlando again, that is just fine.

The Camping World Bowl Stadium is in the worst part of Orlando. Most of the businesses that surround it are liquor stores or bail bonds. There is also a high school.

There is hardly any parking around it. What is there is poorly organized.

The stadium itself is okay. It isn’t a festering dump that ought to be burned down like where Kansas plays. However it isn’t all that nice of a stadium either.

There was a great fear that we were going to be rained on all game. That didn’t happen. It rained for a little bit. But we thought we had won the jackpot because we were sitting under the ledge of the upper deck, so we were protected from the rain.

However, we actually lost that hand. We sat under a pipe that leaked on us the entire game. So instead of being protected from a rain that barely showed up. We were the only wet people in the stadium. It is a shame we weren’t on the Notre Dame side of the stadium. It was pretty much empty. We could have sat anywhere we wanted. Instead, we sat there getting dripped on.

Here are some pictures from the morning:

The game didn’t go the way we wanted. Iowa State finished the season decimated by injuries and it showed when they played one of the best teams in the country.

We left the stadium wet and down, but ready to see if this awful city called Orlando had anything to offer.

Iowa State 121 Bad Guys 44

I didn’t take many pictures at Iowa State football games last year because they are getting stricter about the type of camera you are allowed to carry in. At least they are to me. I see plenty of other people walking in with comparable cameras, but I digress.

No, I don’t digress. The rule as written on the Cyclones website is that Cameras with lens longer than 6 inches is prohibited. Cameras with a lens less than 6 inches is permitted. However, sometimes, security people try to interpret that as nothing that they deem “professional” or anything with a “removable” lens. It is frustrating to educate security people on the rules that they are supposed to enforce and what imaginary rules in their head that they are not allowed to enforce.

After the Iowa game, I only took the Sony RXOII to a couple of games and to the Louisiana-Monroe game I took an old Sony point & shoot that Logan gave me. I wanted to give it a shot to see if it would work as a gameday camera that would prevent me from having to have to have conversations with security people.

The point & shoot takes okay pictures, but it isn’t nearly fast enough to take action photos.

Any way, here are a few pictures I took at the Louisiana-Monroe and TCU games:

2009-09-27

The pictures from the folder 2009-09-27 come from a Saturday when I went down to Des Moines to watch Jen compete in the Des Moines Regatta and watched Iowa State beat Army in football.

All the pageantry that comes with Army coming to your stadium is pretty amazing. Iowa State was also schedule to play both Navy and Air Force, but both those games got cancelled after the Big 12 went to a 9 game conference schedule and some nonconference games had to be cancelled. I still wish those game would get rescheduled, but I know it will never happen.

2009-09-02 & 2009-09-04

The pictures in the folders 2009-09-02 and 2009-09-04 are from two separate but nearly equally great events.

A couple of the pictures are from Alligator Shirt Day. A holiday that I invented back in 2009, but then forgot to honor on a yearly basis. You can bet dollars to donuts that on the 2021 Photography 139 Calendar, you will find Alligator Shirt Day in it. Just one of the changes you will see in the 2021 calendar as I will make it an even more personal project, since I don’t sell them any longer.

The other event is the Iowa State football game against North Dakota State. Back then, I didn’t realize that North Dakota State had one of the most annoying fanbases in the world. A pretty big accomplishment for a nothing university in a town that nobody would’ve heard of if the Cohen brothers didn’t name a movie after the town and then set the movie in Minnesota.

Here are some pictures:

Selfie Project – November

Now that the 2018 backlog is mercifully behind us, it seems like a good time to check back in with THE SELFIE PROJECT. The 2019 version of THE SELFIE PROJECT has almost ran its course. I won’t repeat it in 2020, but maybe I’ll bring it back in 2021. We’ll see.

Taco Tailgate – 2019

A couple Saturdays back a few of us gathered in lot G6 for the sacred ritual that is known as Taco Tailgate.

It was almost an entirely different crew than what usually shows up. Houlihan. No show. Joe. No show. Rachel. No show.

Who did show up?

Jorge. Taco Master! Also: Derrick, Logan, Brandon, and Craig.

Sadly, only 2 home games left. Although I’m efforting to go down to see Iowa State play Kansas State in Manhattan. Dae Hee was supposed to go with me and he crapped out on me.

I’m currently taking applicants for somebody to go on a road trip to Kansas to see the football game known as Farmageddon with me.

If interested, you know how to find me.

An Artist’s Notebook Post #3,500

Welcome to the 3,500th entry in “An Artist’s Notebook”. The blog portion of my Photography 139 website. It has been along time since I first took keyboard hand sitting in the old Computer Mine setup or possibly in my Mom’s basement, because that is where my life was at that time.

In fact, the first time I posted anything on “An Artist’s Notebook” was August 9, 2006. The very first word I wrote, “So”. Maybe not the best word. Maybe not the most forceful word. It is a word that almost feels like an apology.

I clearly didn’t know where this was going to take me and I’m not sure I even know where I’m at now. So.

I would go on in the first post to state that I had a few goals for this blog.

#1. To write in it.

I think I can say safely that 3,499 posts later, I have written in it. I often wonder if I were to print out every page of “An Artist’s Notebook”, how many pages it would be. While I know that most of those pages would just be pictures at not necessarily words, I’m still pretty sure that the entire thing would run several thousands of pages. While the things I write and the nature of what I write and post has changed over time and I’m sure it will continue to change, I will say for now, I’m still on track for Goal #1.

#2. To be as truthful as possible towards my true thoughts and feelings.

On this goal I’m going to give myself an incomplete. I feel that I am truthful to my loyal readers, but I don’t know that I necessarily share my feelings a lot. For example, I don’t know how many of you know how much I despise the open-faced sandwich. It is a pox upon mankind. Kind of like anti-vaxxers. When I think about it, I suppose I don’t hold back much. However, I’ll have to double down on my efforts to let you know about my true feelings. A 5,000 word piece on the worthlessness of the open-faced sandwich is coming your way on Sunday!

#3. Producing something that makes me worthy of having a pretentious sounding journal title like: “An Artist’s Notebook”.

The question here, is this: Is the blog any darn good? It would be arrogant of me to claim that it is. I have garnered a small amount of loyal subscribers. But I’m sure a better blog would garner more. My entries do occasionally gather comments. But I’m sure a better blog would gather more comments. I guess I’ll have to keep plugging away and let the sands of time figure out if this thing is any good.

On these mile marker posts, I like to look at what things and what people have most influenced this post.

On my 750th post, these were the Top 16 post categories and I’ll assume, the only categories I had for posts back then:

College Ames Day – Part III

This is final collection of pictures of College GameDay in Ames. It includes pictures of douche country “celebrity” Eric Church.

There are also a couple pictures from the Iowa State-Iowa game. I didn’t take many pictures because I have pretty much given up on taking pictures at Iowa State games. Plus, if you don’t remember, it poured down rain for about 5 hours of the 6+ hour game. It was a LONG day.

But it wasn’t an all bad day. Yes douche country “celebrity” pick Eric Church picked against the home team, but at the end of the day, all anything will remember is that Lee Corso put on Cy’s head.

Hopefully, the next time that College GameDay comes to Ames, they don’t poop the bed and bring us somebody that Iowa State fans aren’t booing every time he is even mentioned.

Hopefully, the next time College GameDay comes to Ames, Lee Corso is still around to put on Cy’s head.

I don’t have much to say about the game. Obviously it hurts when you dominate a game and lose. Regardless of what you think about the phantom holding call that hurt Iowa State at the end of the day Iowa State didn’t make the plays they needed to win the game. There were about 5 plays in the game that were decided by an inch. Everyone of those plays went Iowa’s way. However, every goal Iowa State has for the season is still on the table.

As for the other stories swirling around still.

I don’t really have anything to say about Bandgate. Looks like there was lots of blame to go around and hopefully things are fixed in the future. I do fear for the Iowa State University Cyclone Varsity Marching Band when they go to Iowa City next year.

I don’t have anything to say about the Des Moines Register digging up tweets a person made 8 years ago when they were 16. In the end, Carson King is still going to raise a ton of money and Busch Beer still sucks!

College Ames Day Part II

One thing I can tell you about being at College GameDay is that it is almost impossible to actually watch the show when you are there. Lee, Kirk, Rece, and Desmond have their back to the crowd and there is so much equipment around them that you can’t really see them.

They broadcast the show on a couple giant screens, but there is such a mass of people there, that the sound from the speakers gets drowned out. That being said, it was magical being at College GameDay. It was an accomplishment that I didn’t think Iowa State would ever achieve. I think under the right circumstances, they will be back. Or at least they will be at another Cyclone game in the future.
